Glasgow, GLG Buildings & Towers
• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide to Buildings & Towers in Glasgow, GLG, Scotland.
Sir George Gilbert Scott designed the building that the University Tower is attached to in 1864, and his son, J. Oldrid, completed its fanciful tower in 1887. It is 85 metres (278 feet) tall, and is seen easily from most parts of the city. At the top is an observation platform providing superb views over the city.
The glass-roofed Argyll Arcade was designed by John Baird and built in 1827. Strips of iron latticed together hold the panes of glass in place to create the feeling of being outdoors while still sheltered. Lined with high-end jewelery shops, the Argyll is one of the oldest covered arcades in Glasgow. Entrances are found on Argyll Street and Buchanan Street.
